For many decades, the Choir of Pilgrim Church has been a significant feature of the Sunday 11am Choral Worship services at Pilgrim Uniting Church, Adelaide. The choir sings a wide range of repertoire including masses, anthems and motets selected from the rich tradition of sacred music, and chants the set psalm every Sunday. The choir also sings a mass for the communion service on the first Sunday of each month, and presents a traditional Service of Lessons and Carols every Christmas Eve. For many years now the Easter Sunday service at 11am has featured a Mozart Mass complete with chamber orchestra, and the 9:30 Christmas Day service has been enriched by a brass quintet.
Since 2015 the choir has expanded its musical offerings to include special choral services on ANZAC Day and All Souls’ or Remembrance Day. Repertoire for these occasions has included Evensongs from the Anglican tradition, and Herbert Howells’ and Maurice Duruflé’s Requiems.
Pilgrim Uniting Church also supports young Adelaide singers by providing a number of scholarships to support them in their studies. Scholarship holders are often called upon to sing the solos in the works the choir performs. In this way they gain important solo experience, in addition to valuable sight-reading training from the rapid turnover of repertoire, and the choir in turn benefits from the presence of fine young singers in its ranks.
Members of Pilgrim’s choir and organ music community are also actively involved in the Church’s initiatives to share its musical traditions with the wider Adelaide community. Lunchtime recitals take place every Thursday at 1pm, at which performances by emerging young artists from the Elder Conservatorium of Music alternate with organ concerts. For many years now Pilgrim has also brought world-class organists to Adelaide, to participate in our 11am worship, and perform highly-acclaimed recitals on our renowned organ.
Since 1994 the Choir of Pilgrim Church has been directed by Peter Kelsall.
